Micronutrients as the name suggests are required in very small amounts but are essential for the body to function properly and enable the body to produce enzymes, hormones that are essential for proper growth and development.

 

Micronutrients comprise of two categories, namely Vitamins and Minerals :

Vitamins are essential organic nutrients that have to be obtained through outside sources and deficiency of vitamins create severe consequences. Few important vitamins are Vit. A, Vit. B1, B3, B6 etc.

Minerals are inorganic nutrients which also play a key role in ensuring overall health. Few minerals are Iron, Iodine , Zinc etc.

According to the latest WHO report approximately 3 billion people around the world suffer from micronutrient deficiencies majorly popular as anemia from iron deficiency, goiter from iodine deficiency and rickets for vitamin D deficiency.

 

Also VAD known as Vit. A deficiency is severely affecting children. An estimated 2,50,000 to 5,00,000 vit. A deficient children become blind every year, half of them dying within 12 months of losing their sight.
